We flew from Rocky on the east coast to Adelaide on the southern coast about midway across Oz. So our original plan had been to take The Ghan train from Adelaide to
Darwin, stopping in Alice Springs and Katherine. However, the first leg
of the train ride was fully booked more than two months in advance. We
then decided we would take Greyhound Australia and break up the 20-hour
trip by stopping in Coober Pedy on our way to Alice Springs. This was
our plan for a while, but then Charles decided to look into renting a
car and it actually wasn't much more expensive. And we're so glad we
did!
I drove on the left! So much fun! Definitely a sketchy
experience at first, but no major mishaps. My main mistake was
constantly turning the windshield wipers on instead of the blinkers -
luckily it was raining, so no one noticed. I asked Charles to be a
backseat driver and remind me to stay on the left each time I turned.
All was well and I loved it!
The only things we had planned for Adelaide was to pick up the rental car and get tasty treats at the Central Market, which our Yorkshire friends had recommended. The market was indeed spectacular! And really cheap for Oz. Tons of fresh veggies and fruit and great shops offering different ethnic foods. It reminded me of a large, less shiny and more diverse version of Redding Station in Philly. We had a lovely dashboard meal on our way out of town. (The pink stuff is beetroot tzatziki...yum)
Before going to the market, we spent the morning washing everything we have on high heat. Charles had some bites from when we were in Agnes Water at the not-incredibly-clean hostel, and we had just been hearing bedbug stories from the Yorkshiremen...people...um...how about "Yorkies?" We were being a bit paranoid and didn't really think that's what the bites were, but didn't want to take any chances. So we threw half our stuff in the washer, then put on one outfit of wet clothes and put everything else in. fun stuff. A freezing morning spent in wet clothes, but it helped ease our minds. Thankfully neither of us have had any mysterious bites since.
